Viewed from the plantar aspect of the left foot, the calcaneus sits posteriorly with the talus perched superiorly, while the cuboid and navicular bridge forward into the bases of the five metatarsals and the phalanges distally. Across the sole, the long plantar ligament spans from the plantar surface of the calcaneus to the cuboid and proximal metatarsals, lying superficial to the short plantar ligament (plantar calcaneocuboid ligament) that tightly reinforces the calcaneocuboid joint. Medially, the plantar calcaneonavicular ligament (spring ligament) supports the head of the talus and blends with the plantar fascia and the tibialis posterior tendon, creating a continuous sling beneath the medial longitudinal arch. Plantar ligament anatomy matters because these bands take compressive load from the bony arches and redirect it into tensile support during stance and push-off, and small changes in their integrity alter hindfoot and midfoot mechanics. Spring ligament attenuation, often paired with tibialis posterior tendon dysfunction, allows plantarflexion and medial drift of the talar head and contributes to adult acquired flatfoot deformity. Lateral column pain after inversion injury frequently localizes around the calcaneocuboid joint, where the bifurcate and plantar calcaneocuboid ligaments become surgical and imaging targets.
