Description
Plantar skin of the male foot remains intact while an anatomical overlay tracks the lumbrical muscles deep to the plantar aponeurosis in the central sole. Each lumbrical arises from the tendons of flexor digitorum longus in the midfoot, then runs distally and anteriorly along the medial side of digits two through five, positioned between the flexor tendons and the adjacent interossei. Medially, the abductor hallucis borders the central compartment, while abductor digiti minimi defines the lateral margin; flexor digitorum brevis lies superficial to the long flexor tendons, with the lumbricals appearing as slender, wormlike slips emerging alongside those tendons as they approach the metatarsophalangeal joints. Small muscles, big consequences. Functionally, the lumbricals couple plantarflexion at the metatarsophalangeal joints with extension at the interphalangeal joints via their insertion into the dorsal digital expansion, so loss of intrinsic balance quickly presents as clawing of the lesser toes.
