Description
Posterior elements of five stacked vertebrae are presented with the spinous processes aligned in the midline and the laminae flaring laterally toward the transverse processes. A continuous supraspinous ligament runs longitudinally along the apices of the spinous processes, while the interspinous ligaments occupy the spaces between adjacent spines, deep to the supraspinous band. Segmental spinal nerves exit laterally through the intervertebral foramina, shown as paired blue rami related to the pedicles and facet (zygapophyseal) joints. Midline anatomy is clear. Emphasis on the posterior ligamentous chain matters when you are teaching flexion mechanics and posterior tension band failure, the pattern classically seen in Chance fractures from seatbelt injury, where the supraspinous and interspinous ligaments often disrupt across multiple levels. This orientation also supports procedural planning: during midline posterior approaches for laminectomy or instrumented fusion, surgeons split paraspinal musculature off the spinous processes and must decide whether to preserve or reconstruct the posterior ligament complex to limit postoperative instability. Palpable spinous processes provide reliable surface landmarks for level localization, but the illustration keeps attention on the deeper bands that actually restrain separation during flexion.
