Pale intervertebral discs separate adjacent vertebral bodies, while fibrous bands consistent with the anterior and posterior longitudinal ligaments track along the vertebral bodies, and thinner stabilizers such as the ligamenta flava, interspinous ligaments, and supraspinous ligament span between laminae and spinous processes. Red paraspinal muscle mass occupies the posterior compartment, with fibers running longitudinally and obliquely in planes consistent with the erector spinae (iliocostalis thoracis, longissimus thoracis, spinalis) and deeper transversospinalis group (multifidus and rotatores) close to the transverse processes. Clear bony landmarks anchor the relationships. Thoracic spine mechanics depend on this ligament and muscle balance because rib articulation constrains motion while still permitting coupled rotation and flexion needed for respiration. Pain generators in the mid back often localize to the costovertebral joints or to muscle and tendon attachments near the rib angle, and this view helps separate those from discogenic or facet mediated sources.
