Description
Running superficially along the posterolateral margin of the foot, the lesser saphenous vein (small saphenous vein) is traced from the lateral dorsal venous network toward the ankle and leg, drawn in relation to the fibula laterally and the tibia medially. An anterior projection of both lower limbs frames the vein against the bony landmarks of the distal femur, patella, tibial shaft, and fibular shaft, with the knee and ankle regions kept visually uncluttered for orientation. Perforating tributaries and venous valves are suggested along the course, reinforcing the directionality of flow toward the popliteal fossa. Anterior presentation is useful for teaching because most learners first anchor leg anatomy to the patella, tibial crest, and malleoli, then mentally rotate to understand the small saphenous vein’s posterior calf ascent and its typical termination in the popliteal vein. That relationship matters in clinical duplex mapping for varicose disease, where small saphenous reflux and saphenopopliteal junction variants can change the plan for endovenous ablation or ligation. Surface anatomy also counts. The small saphenous vein travels near the sural nerve in the distal calf, a practical concern during cannulation, phlebectomy, or thermal ablation when paresthesia follows nerve irritation.
