Description

Seen from an anterior perspective, the lower limbs are rendered semi-transparently to trace the superficial venous network and accompanying lymphatic vessels from mid-thigh to the dorsum and plantar aspects of the feet. The small (lesser) saphenous vein is identified along the posterolateral calf where it arises from the lateral end of the dorsal venous arch and the lateral marginal vein, then courses superiorly toward the popliteal fossa to drain into the popliteal vein at the saphenopopliteal junction. Communicating perforators link this superficial channel to the deep venous system, and venous valves are indicated along the vessel’s length. Lymphatic collectors accompany the superficial veins, with drainage tracking proximally toward the popliteal and inguinal nodal basins. A hidden vessel, mapped from the front. That concealed posterior course is exactly why an anterior map is useful in teaching and planning. The lesser saphenous vein is a common source of varicosities and reflux in the posterior calf, and its termination is famously variable, information that matters when you place a duplex probe, plan endovenous ablation, or hunt an incompetent perforator. It is also a practical landmark relationship: the sural nerve often runs adjacent to the small saphenous vein, so interventions along the distal and mid-calf carry a real risk of sensory neuropathy if anatomy is assumed rather than checked.
