Description
Anteriorly, the male lumbar spine is presented from L1 through L5 with five broad vertebral bodies stacked vertically and separated by intervertebral discs. The kidney shaped bodies widen slightly inferiorly, while the pedicles appear as short, stout bridges projecting posteriorly from the posterolateral margins of each body toward the vertebral arch. Transverse processes extend laterally on both sides at each level, framing the column and hinting at the robust muscle and ligament attachments that characterize the lower back. Front facing lumbar anatomy matters because so much clinical decision making starts with the vertebral bodies and disc spaces you see on an AP lumbar radiograph, a coronal CT reconstruction, or a fluoroscopic setup. Disc height loss at L4 to L5 or L5 to S1 is a common correlate of degenerative disc disease, and vertebral body wedging is a key teaching point in compression fractures, including those from osteoporosis or high energy trauma. Clear visualization of vertebral body contours also supports level identification before anterior or anterolateral approaches to the lumbar spine, where wrong level surgery remains a preventable complication. Landmarks matter.
