Description
Almond-shaped ovary (ovarium) is shown as a paired female gonad positioned in the lateral pelvis, with its tubal pole oriented superolaterally toward the fimbriated infundibulum of the uterine tube. Medially, the ovarian surface faces the uterus across the peritoneal space of the broad ligament, while the mesovarian border marks the hilum where vessels and nerves enter. The uterine tube’s fimbriae drape toward the ovary, and the relationship to the ovarian ligament (to the uterine cornu) and suspensory ligament of the ovary (to the pelvic wall, carrying the ovarian vessels) is implied by this adjacency. Small, but anatomically busy. This gross arrangement matters because ovulation depends on efficient pick-up of the oocyte by the fimbriae, and subtle anatomic variation can influence fertility and the spread of disease along peritoneal surfaces. The ovary’s close relationship to the ovarian vessels in the infundibulopelvic (suspensory) ligament underlies a key surgical risk point in oophorectomy or salpingo-oophorectomy, where secure pedicle control prevents hemorrhage and protects the ureter coursing inferiorly and medially. Clinically, this is also the corridor where adnexal torsion occurs, twisting the vascular pedicle and producing acute pelvic pain with ovarian enlargement.
