Description
Adult female ovarium is represented as a cutaway surface anatomy study, with a dense ovarian cortex forming the peripheral shell and enclosing a more loosely organized medulla centrally. Primordial, primary, and antral follicles populate the cortical stroma just deep to the tunica albuginea, while larger, more mature follicles expand toward the ovarian surface and displace adjacent cortex laterally and inferiorly. Medullary connective tissue occupies the center and carries the major ovarian vessels and nerves toward the hilum, the attachment zone where the mesovarium would meet the medial aspect of the ovary. For teaching, this cortex to medulla relationship clarifies why most functional ovarian lesions arise from follicular structures or surface epithelium rather than the medulla, and why vascular supply concentrates at the hilum. Clinically, it also supports orientation for ultrasound correlation: simple follicular cysts track with enlarging antral follicles near the cortical periphery, whereas torsion threatens medullary venous outflow first, producing stromal edema and peripheralization of follicles on imaging.
