Description
Oriented in lateral perspective, the superior pole of the kidney is presented with the convex lateral border in profile and the upper cortical cap wrapping over the apex of the medullary tissue. The renal cortex occupies the peripheral zone, while the uppermost renal pyramids (medulla) lie deep to it, their bases directed toward the cortex and their papillae pointing medially toward the renal sinus. A thin fibrous renal capsule outlines the organ surface. Clear pole anatomy. Clinical teaching often hinges on segmental organization because partial nephrectomy and trauma management aim to preserve functioning parenchyma while controlling bleeding from segmental branches of the renal artery. Seeing the superior segment from the lateral side helps you anticipate what is encountered when mobilizing the kidney off the posterior abdominal wall, where perirenal fat and Gerota fascia are traversed before cortical entry, and it frames why upper pole lesions can sit close to the suprarenal gland and pleura on the left or the hepatic bare area on the right.
