Description
Arising as a small orbital branch, the zygomatico-orbital artery courses from the lacrimal artery and enters the lateral orbital wall near the zygomatic bone, tracking anteriorly toward the zygomatico-orbital foramen. Along its path it lies deep to the orbicularis oculi and lateral canthal soft tissues, then distributes fine arterial twigs to the periorbita, lacrimal gland region, and adjacent eyelid tissues. Nearby, you would expect to see the zygomaticofacial and zygomaticotemporal nerves emerging from the zygoma and crossing superficially, with facial expression muscles arranged around the palpebral fissure and oral aperture. Orientation matters. Clinically, this vessel becomes relevant during lateral orbitotomy and zygomatic approaches to the orbit, where dissection near the lateral orbital rim and frontozygomatic region can encounter the zygomatico-orbital artery and its anastomoses with the superficial temporal and infraorbital arterial systems. It also explains stubborn oozing during periorbital trauma and repairs involving the lateral canthus or zygomatic complex fractures, where a small-caliber artery can retract into the periosteal plane. For teaching, the artery provides a clean example of how the ophthalmic artery territory communicates with external carotid branches across the zygoma.
