Description
Sectioned along the median sagittal plane, the male head and neck reveal the cerebral hemispheres superiorly with the corpus callosum arching over the lateral ventricle region, while the diencephalic midline lies inferior to the cingulate area and anterior to the midbrain. Posteriorly, the cerebellum occupies the posterior cranial fossa, sitting dorsal to the pons and medulla as the brainstem descends toward the foramen magnum and upper cervical spinal cord. Surrounding osseous landmarks include the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital bones, with the mandible and dentition positioned anteroinferiorly; inferior in the neck, the hyoid bone rests superior to the laryngeal framework and anterior to the cervical vertebral column. C1 through C7 align in a gentle cervical lordosis. A midline sagittal section is the teaching view for ventricular and callosal anatomy, and it is also the plane that best explains how raised intracranial pressure can drive transtentorial or tonsillar herniation, compressing the midbrain or medulla at the craniocervical junction. Neurosurgeons and radiologists often reference these relationships when correlating symptoms to lesion level, for example distinguishing brainstem stroke patterns from cerebellar mass effect, or planning a posterior fossa approach where the brainstem and cerebellum crowd each other in tight quarters. Bone matters here too. The foramen magnum and upper cervical canal set the boundaries.
