Description
Mid-sagittal section through the male head and neck reveals the cerebral hemisphere with its gyri and sulci superiorly, the diencephalon (thalamus and hypothalamus) centrally, and the brainstem descending as midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata to meet the cervical spinal cord at the foramen magnum. Posterior and inferior to the occipital lobes, the cerebellum sits in the posterior cranial fossa, separated from the cerebrum by the tentorial region and aligned behind the fourth ventricle. Anteriorly, the nasal cavity and oral cavity appear in profile with the hard palate, teeth, and maxilla and mandible in section, while the cervical vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs stack inferiorly behind the pharyngeal airway. A slender yellow element is consistent with a cranial nerve segment in midline vicinity. Sagittal anatomy like this is the workhorse view for teaching ventricular relationships and brainstem orientation, because you can trace a continuous superior-to-inferior axis from the corpus callosum region through the diencephalon to the medulla and cervicomedullary junction. It also matches clinical thinking in neuroimaging: midline MR slices are where you judge tonsillar position in Chiari I malformation, evaluate brainstem compression, and orient to the sella region when discussing pituitary and hypothalamic pathology. Landmarks are clear. The posterior fossa anatomy reads cleanly against the clivus and upper cervical spine.
