Description
Running in the anterior compartment of the male leg, the extensor digitorum longus lies lateral to tibialis anterior and anterior to the fibula as it descends toward the ankle. Distally, its muscle belly tapers into four tendons that pass deep to the extensor retinaculum at the anterior ankle, then diverge across the dorsum of the foot toward digits II through V. The tibia sits medially and the fibula laterally, with the talus positioned inferior to the distal tibia and fibula at the tibiotalar (ankle) joint. Bony landmarks of the tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges provide clear reference points for the tendons’ distal course and insertions on the dorsal digital expansions. Clear depiction of the extensor tendons beneath the extensor retinaculum matters because this region concentrates structures vulnerable to friction, laceration, and compartment pressure.
