Description

Paired ovaries occupy the lateral pelvic cavity within the adnexa, positioned medial to the pelvic sidewall and inferior to the pelvic brim, with their long axes oriented roughly anteroposterior. Each ovary lies adjacent to the fimbriae of the uterine tube, with the mesovarium attaching along the anterior (hilar) border where the ovarian vessels and nerves enter, while the free posterior surface faces the rectouterine region. Surrounding context in the lower torso cutaway logically includes coils of small intestine and sigmoid colon superiorly, the pelvic floor musculature inferiorly, and regional vasculature and lymphatics coursing along the iliac vessels.
