Sectioned in lateral profile, the male skull is opened superiorly to expose the cranial cavity, with the brainstem presented in continuity from midbrain to pons and medulla oblongata along the clivus. Anterior to the brainstem, the sella turcica within the body of the sphenoid is visible with the pituitary gland seated in the hypophyseal fossa, while the cavernous segment of the internal carotid artery curves parasellar before turning toward the carotid canal. Yellow cranial nerves course from the brainstem and skull base toward their foramina, with their proximal root entry and exit zones clustered around the pontomedullary junction and the lateral medulla. Bone landmarks read clearly. It orients fast. Spatially, this cutaway makes the skull base relationships that drive clinical decision making easier to teach: carotid canal to cavernous sinus to parasellar region, all in immediate proximity to cranial nerves III, IV, V1, V2, and VI and the pituitary. Cavernous sinus pathology (aneurysm, carotid cavernous fistula, invasive pituitary adenoma) often presents with painful ophthalmoplegia or trigeminal sensory loss because those nerves run in the sinus wall or alongside the internal carotid artery. The brainstem segments also support localization, for example distinguishing midbrain syndromes from pontine infarcts affecting the corticospinal tract and abducens nucleus. Neuroanatomy and head and neck courses can use this plate to tie bony landmarks (sella turcica, clivus, foramina) to brainstem level and cranial nerve exits during practicals and exam review. It also suits neurosurgery and neuroradiology teaching files when explaining transsphenoidal approaches, cavernous sinus anatomy, or skull base cross section orientation in CT and MRI.
