Description
Arising from the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve (CN V3), the deep temporal nerves course superiorly in the infratemporal fossa and enter the deep surface of the temporalis muscle, where they branch within the muscle belly. A lateral perspective places the temporalis on the side of the skull, spanning from the temporal fossa to the coronoid process of the mandible, with the deep temporal nerves running deep to the muscle fibers rather than on the superficial temporal fascia. The zygomatic arch sits anterior and inferior to the squamous temporal bone, and nearby you can expect to see accompanying deep temporal arteries and veins tracking in close association. Spatially, these motor branches lie superior to the infratemporal crest and lateral to the pterygoid plates, ascending toward the temporal lines. Deep temporal nerve anatomy matters whenever you are teaching mastication mechanics or planning procedures near the temporal fossa. Temporalis pain after trauma, bruxism, or temporomandibular disorders often gets discussed in the same breath as trigeminal motor supply, and this view makes it easier to separate the deep temporal nerves from superficially coursing sensory branches in the region. It is also a practical reference for avoiding iatrogenic denervation during temporal approaches and for understanding why dissection on the deep surface of temporalis puts the motor supply at risk. Small nerve, big consequence.
