Description
Running along the ulnar border of the forearm, the flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU) forms a thick proximal muscle belly that tapers into a discrete tendon as it approaches the wrist. From a lateral perspective beneath a transparent skin envelope, the FCU sits superficial on the posteromedial forearm, arising from the medial epicondyle of the humerus and the proximal ulna near the olecranon, then coursing distally toward the pisiform. Deep to the muscle, the ulna and radius frame the forearm axis, while the humerus, elbow joint surfaces, and the carpal, metacarpal, and phalangeal bones establish alignment from arm to hand. Cartilage shading at the elbow and wrist marks the articular contours. Clear landmarks. FCU matters because it is both a functional ulnar-sided wrist flexor and a landmark for neurovascular anatomy at the medial elbow. The ulnar nerve passes posterior to the medial epicondyle and enters the forearm between the humeral and ulnar heads of FCU, a relationship that anchors discussions of cubital tunnel syndrome, traction neuropathy, and safe dissection planes during ulnar nerve decompression or transposition. Distally, the FCU tendon inserts on the pisiform and continues via the pisohamate and pisometacarpal ligaments toward the hamate and base of the fifth metacarpal, a common site for tendinopathy in racket sports and a reference point for ulnar-sided wrist pain. Faculty can drop this asset into upper limb gross anatomy labs, kinesiology modules on wrist flexion and ulnar deviation, or exam items that ask students to connect surface form to deep landmarks.
