Description
Presented in lateral profile with the calvaria and occipital squama removed, the skull base is opened to emphasize the sphenoid bone highlighted in blue. The sphenoid body sits centrally in the middle cranial fossa, with the sella turcica and hypophyseal fossa positioned superior to the sphenoidal sinus region and anterior to the dorsum sellae and clivus. Its greater wing extends laterally toward the temporal bone, while the lesser wing projects anterosuperiorly toward the frontal bone, framing the region of the optic canal and superior orbital fissure in standard gross anatomy orientation. Inferiorly, the craniovertebral junction continues into the upper cervical spine, with the atlas and axis aligned beneath the occipital condyles. Sphenoid anatomy matters because it is the crossroads for neurovascular corridors and surgical entry points to the central skull base. The relationship of the sella turcica to the anterior and posterior clinoid processes underpins transsphenoidal approaches for pituitary adenoma, and even in a simplified gross view you can orient the expected course of the internal carotid artery within the cavernous sinus lateral to the sphenoid body.
