Description
Arising as the continuation of the femoral artery after it traverses the adductor hiatus, the popliteal artery descends on the medial side of the distal femur and enters the popliteal fossa posterior to the knee joint. From this medial perspective, the vessel’s course is read against the medial femoral condyle superiorly and the proximal tibia inferiorly, with its segment lying deep to the posterior joint capsule as it approaches the tibial plateau. Small arterial branches are suggested in the periarticular network, and accompanying venous channels track alongside the artery in the confined space behind the knee. Depth is the point. A medial view matters because it clarifies the transition zone from adductor canal to popliteal fossa, a region where the artery is relatively fixed and vulnerable during posterior knee dislocation and distal femur or proximal tibia fractures. Surgeons planning popliteal artery exposure, bypass, or endovascular access need to internalize how close the vessel runs to the posterior capsule and the bony contours of the femur and tibia. This orientation also helps explain why popliteal aneurysms can present with distal embolization and why compartment syndrome can follow missed vascular injury.
