Description

Arcing across the anterolateral aspect of the distal femur, the superior lateral genicular artery curves superiorly over the lateral femoral condyle before contributing to the periarticular genicular anastomosis. Its course is seen deep to the distal quadriceps tendon and lateral retinacular tissues, with the patella positioned anterior to the femoral trochlea and the tibial plateau lying inferiorly. Portions of the quadriceps muscle mass lie proximal and anterior, while lateral hamstring and capsular structures occupy a more posterior and lateral plane. Orientation is clear. Surgeons and interventionalists care about this vessel because it is a consistent feeder to the anterolateral knee capsule, synovium, and patellofemoral region, and it forms collateral pathways when more proximal inflow is compromised. The artery is encountered around the lateral femoral condyle during lateral arthrotomy, distal femoral exposure, and some approaches for fracture fixation, where uncontrolled bleeding can obscure the field quickly. It also becomes a target in genicular artery embolization for refractory knee osteoarthritis pain, where selective catheterization depends on understanding its relationship to the femoral condyle and adjacent soft tissues. Use this anterior knee vascular anatomy plate in orthopedic surgery teaching files, MSK radiology and angiography lectures, and medical device training that references the genicular anastomosis around the femoral condyles. It also fits well in anatomy lab manuals and clinical atlases that pair ligamentous landmarks (ACL, PCL, patellar tendon) with regional arterial supply for procedural planning. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
