Description

Arising from the popliteal or distal femoral arterial system, the superior medial genicular artery courses medially and anteriorly toward the knee, descending along the anteromedial distal femur before turning toward the medial femoral epicondyle. From an anterior perspective, it sits deep to the medial margin of the quadriceps tendon and related retinacular fibers, then contributes branches that sweep across the anterior capsule toward the patella. The femur, tibia, and patella frame the field, with companion veins in blue and regional nerves in light blue tracking near the periarticular soft tissues. Small vessels interconnect into the peri-patellar and genicular anastomotic network. This artery matters because the genicular system is the knee’s collateral lifeline when the popliteal artery is compromised by atherosclerotic disease, acute thrombosis, or traumatic injury. Surgeons planning medial parapatellar arthrotomy, total knee arthroplasty exposure, or quadriceps tendon and medial retinacular work often encounter bleeding from the superior medial genicular branches as they cross the medial femoral condyle and anterior capsule.
