Description
Arising from the popliteal artery on the medial side of the distal femur, the superior medial genicular artery courses anteriorly and slightly superior to the medial femoral condyle, then curves toward the periarticular genicular anastomosis. From a medial perspective, its relationship to the adductor magnus tendon at the adductor tubercle is apparent, with the vessel passing deep to the sartorius and gracilis and near the medial head of gastrocnemius as it approaches the joint capsule. Nearby paired venae comitantes accompany the artery, and fine articular branches track along the medial capsule toward the tibial plateau. This medial view matters when teaching or planning approaches that traverse the medial distal thigh and knee. During medial parapatellar arthrotomy, MCL repair, or hamstring tendon harvest at the pes anserinus, small genicular branches can be a persistent source of bleeding if their course is not anticipated. A practical landmark. The superior medial genicular artery also contributes to collateral perfusion around the knee when the femoropopliteal segment is stenosed or occluded, so its anastomoses become more than textbook detail in peripheral arterial disease. Suitable for gross anatomy and musculoskeletal modules covering the genicular circulation, as well as orthopedic and vascular surgery teaching files illustrating safe dissection planes around the medial femoral condyle and adductor magnus insertion. Publishers will also find it appropriate for chapters on knee arthroplasty exposure, periarticular vascular supply, and postoperative hematoma risk. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
