Description
Oriented from a posterior perspective, the sciatic nerve descends in the posterior thigh and continues as the tibial nerve through the popliteal fossa, where it lies superficial to the popliteal vessels and deep to the fascial plane of the calf. Inferior to the knee, the tibial nerve tracks along the midline of the posterior compartment, running between the heads of gastrocnemius and then deep to soleus as it approaches the posterior aspect of the ankle. Medially, the tibia forms the dominant bony landmark of the leg, while the fibula remains lateral, framing the course of the nerve toward the tarsal tunnel. Bony anatomy is kept explicit. Clinical relevance centers on the popliteal region and distal tunnel anatomy: the tibial nerve can be affected by trauma or space-occupying lesions in the popliteal fossa, and its distal branches are implicated in tarsal tunnel syndrome beneath the flexor retinaculum posterior to the medial malleolus. This posterior view supports teaching of how the tibial nerve relates to the knee joint capsule and to posterior compartment musculature, which is the relationship you reference during posterior approaches and when interpreting neurologic deficits such as plantar flexion weakness or loss of plantar sensation. Landmarks stay consistent. That helps.
