Description
Spanning the inferior thoracic aperture, the diaphragm forms a domed musculotendinous partition between the thoracic cavity and the abdomen, seen here from an anterior perspective within the male rib cage. Radially oriented muscle fibers converge on the central tendon, while the peripheral attachments arise from the xiphoid process, the inner surfaces of ribs and costal cartilages (costal part), and the upper lumbar vertebrae via the right and left crura. Anteriorly, the sternal and costal fibers frame the substernal angle and lie inferior to the lower intercostal muscles, with the vertebral column centered posteriorly in the background. Clear midline orientation. Functionally, this view helps you teach how diaphragmatic contraction increases thoracic volume and how the phrenic nerves (C3 to C5) drive that movement while also referring pain to the shoulder when the central tendon or diaphragmatic pleura is irritated. Surgeons and proceduralists use these relationships when planning subxiphoid access, interpreting elevated hemidiaphragm on chest radiography from phrenic nerve palsy, or explaining why diaphragmatic dysfunction produces basal atelectasis and orthopnea. Use this plate in gross anatomy and respiratory mechanics teaching to link costal margin anatomy to the diaphragm’s sternal, costal, and crural origins, and in clinical handouts on diaphragmatic paralysis, hiatal hernia, and traumatic rupture at the posterolateral weak zone.
