Description
Anteriorly oriented, the paired lateral ventricles occupy the deep white matter of each cerebral hemisphere, their frontal (anterior) horns extending superiorly and laterally into the frontal lobes on either side of the midline. Between the ventricular cavities, the septum pellucidum and body of the corpus callosum form the medial roof, while the head of the caudate nucleus lies lateral to the ventricular wall and the thalamus contributes to the floor more posteriorly. Inferiorly, the optic nerves converge toward the optic chiasm at the basal forebrain, and the brainstem continues caudally in the midline beneath the diencephalon. Cerebrospinal fluid fills the ventricular system. An anterior view that preserves the relationship between the ventricular horns and surrounding deep nuclei is the one you want when teaching ventricular enlargement patterns and midline shift. Dilation of the frontal horns is a familiar marker in hydrocephalus and in normal pressure hydrocephalus assessments, while asymmetric compression of a lateral ventricle helps localize mass effect from frontal lobe tumors, subdural hematoma, or intracerebral hemorrhage. The optic chiasm placement also helps frame chiasmal compression syndromes (classically bitemporal hemianopia) in relation to the third ventricular region, even when the third ventricle itself is not the focus. Use this rendering in neuroanatomy and neuroradiology courses to correlate gross ventricular anatomy with axial and coronal CT or MRI landmarks, and in teaching files that contrast obstructive versus communicating hydrocephalus. It also fits neurosurgical and neurology publications discussing ventricular catheter trajectories, intraventricular hemorrhage distribution, and localization of deep gray matter adjacent to the ventricular walls.
