Description
Centered within the vertebral canal, the spinal cord (myelon) lies posterior to the vertebral body and intervertebral disc and anterior to the laminae and spinous process, with the pedicles forming the lateral walls of its bony shelter. An intervertebral disc sits between adjacent vertebral bodies, its annulus fibrosus encircling the nucleus pulposus, while spinal nerve roots course laterally toward the intervertebral foramina to form mixed spinal nerves. Yellow peripheral nerves radiate outward from the cord level, and paired red and blue vessels track along the vertebral elements and around the canal, consistent with segmental arterial supply and venous drainage of the vertebral column. Orientation is segmental and transverse in concept, emphasizing the cord-to-bone relationship. Disc morphology and nerve position are the teaching hinge here because most compressive radiculopathies originate at the posterolateral disc margin, where annular tears and nucleus pulposus herniation can narrow the lateral recess or intervertebral foramen and impinge the exiting or traversing nerve root. Small distances matter. This cross-sectional arrangement also maps cleanly onto axial CT and MRI interpretation, and it mirrors the corridor surgeons use in laminectomy or discectomy when decompressing the neural elements while respecting the posterior bony arch and epidural vascular channels.
