Description
Centered within the vertebral canal, the spinal cord (medulla spinalis, myelon) sits posterior to the vertebral body and anterior to the laminae and spinous process, framed laterally by the pedicles and transverse processes. Dorsal (posterior) and ventral (anterior) nerve rootlets emerge from the cord on each side and course toward the intervertebral foramen, with their trajectories implied in cross-section. Trabecular bone of the vertebral body is rendered deep to the cortical shell, reinforcing the osseous ring formed by the vertebral arch around the neural elements. Small-caliber vessels are diagrammed along the cord surface, with arterial and venous channels differentiated by color. Cross-sectional relationships matter when you are teaching or planning around canal compromise. A few millimeters of posterior disc-osteophyte complex or vertebral body retropulsion narrows the anterior epidural space first, compressing ventral cord tracts and the anterior spinal artery territory, a pattern that maps cleanly onto anterior cord syndrome and central cord presentations. Posteriorly, hypertrophy of the ligamentum flavum and infolding of the laminae encroach from the dorsal aspect, a common mechanism in degenerative cervical and lumbar stenosis. This slice makes those directions of risk obvious. Use this artwork in neuroanatomy and spine modules to anchor orientation (anterior versus posterior) before moving to axial CT or MRI, and in orthopaedic or neurosurgical teaching files to explain laminectomy, laminoplasty, and the corridor to the posterior elements without losing the cord-root relationship. It also fits pathology plates on canal stenosis, burst fractures, or epidural hematoma where spatial reasoning drives diagnosis and operative approach.
