Description
Centered within the vertebral canal, the spinal cord (medulla spinalis, myelon) lies posterior to the vertebral bodies and intervertebral disc, with the vertebral arch forming a protective roof through the pedicles and laminae. An articulated motion segment is implied, with adjacent vertebral bodies separated by an intervertebral disc whose annulus fibrosus encircles the nucleus pulposus in cross-section. Laterally, the canal margins and pedicles define the route toward the intervertebral foramina where spinal nerves and their roots would traverse in close relationship to the disc and posterior elements. Bone dominates the outer contour. Disc anatomy in this context matters because most compressive radiculopathies originate at the disc-nerve interface, where posterolateral annular failure can allow nucleus pulposus material to migrate toward the lateral recess and intervertebral foramen. The posterior longitudinal ligament and the relative thickness of the annulus help explain why herniations often spare the midline yet threaten traversing nerve roots, a point that is easier to teach when the vertebral canal is shown as a rigid boundary. Compression myelopathy and canal stenosis also start to make sense when you see how little extra space the cord has once disc bulge and osteophytes encroach.
