Viewed from the lateral aspect, the ethmoid bone sits between the nasal cavity and the orbit, with the orbital plate (lamina papyracea) forming a thin medial wall of the orbit and a lateral boundary of the ethmoidal air cells. Superiorly, the ethmoidal labyrinth relates to the frontal bone and anterior cranial fossa, while inferiorly it contributes to the superior nasal concha and the lateral wall of the nasal cavity. Medially, the perpendicular plate would align with the nasal septum, and posteriorly the ethmoid articulates toward the sphenoid at the level of the superior nasal cavity. The paper-thin lamina papyracea is the visual anchor in this perspective. Clinical relevance centers on how little bone separates orbit from sinus. Endoscopic sinus surgery and functional ethmoidectomy work directly along the lamina papyracea, where a breach can produce orbital emphysema, extraocular muscle injury (often the medial rectus), or postoperative diplopia. Infection can also track across this boundary, so ethmoid sinusitis remains a common source of orbital cellulitis in adults and children. Thin bone. Real consequences.
