Description
Positioned at the midline of the anterior cranial base, the ethmoid bone is rendered from a posterior perspective, with the perpendicular plate descending inferiorly to form the superior part of the nasal septum. Laterally, the ethmoidal labyrinths project as paired masses that contribute to the medial orbital walls and the superior and middle nasal conchae, their scroll-like contours framing the upper nasal airway. Superiorly, the cribriform plate spans between the labyrinths, while posteriorly the ethmoid articulates with the body of the sphenoid at the sphenoethmoidal junction. Symmetry between left and right nasal cavities is emphasized. This posterior view matters because it clarifies relationships that drive both sinonasal disease patterns and surgical orientation. Posterior ethmoid air cells sit immediately anterior to the sphenoid sinus and close to the optic canal and internal carotid artery, so distinguishing ethmoid from sphenoid landmarks is a safety issue during endoscopic sinus surgery and transsphenoidal approaches.
