Description
Cut through the anterior cranial base, the ethmoid bone is centered between the paired orbits and nasal cavity, with the crista galli projecting superiorly in the midline and the cribriform plate extending laterally on either side. Inferior to the cribriform plate, the perpendicular plate descends to form the superior portion of the nasal septum, while the ethmoidal labyrinths sit lateral to the septum, medial to the orbital plates of the frontal bone (lamina papyracea). Anteriorly the ethmoid articulates with the frontal bone at the frontonasal region, and posteriorly it approaches the body of the sphenoid toward the sella turcica in the central skull base. Several foramina and grooves along the floor of the cranial cavity provide landmarks for neurovascular passage. This cutaway perspective matters because the cribriform plate is both a bony partition and a neuroanatomical gateway: olfactory nerve filaments traverse its foramina to reach the olfactory bulbs on the frontal lobe’s inferior surface. Even small fractures here, classically after blunt anterior skull trauma, can cause cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea and anosmia, and they create a route for ascending infection to the meninges. The ethmoidal labyrinth and lamina papyracea also define the medial orbital wall, a thin barrier relevant to orbital cellulitis and endoscopic sinus surgery. Use this model for teaching the anterior cranial fossa in gross anatomy, neuroradiology correlation of skull base cross sections, or operative orientation for endoscopic endonasal and transcribriform approaches.
