Description
Rendered in lateral profile with the surrounding skull and upper cervical vertebrae kept semi-transparent, the ethmoid bone is isolated in beige within the anterior cranial base. Its cribriform plate sits horizontally, forming the roof of the nasal cavity and lying inferior to the frontal bone, while the perpendicular plate descends in the midline to contribute to the nasal septum. Medial orbital components of the ethmoid (lamina papyracea) align just posterior to the lacrimal bone and medial to the orbit, and the superior and middle nasal conchae project inferomedially from the ethmoidal labyrinth into the nasal cavity. Orientation is immediate. Clinical relevance centers on how little bone separates the ethmoidal air cells from adjacent compartments. The lamina papyracea is thin enough that ethmoid sinusitis can extend into the orbit, and endoscopic sinus surgery in the middle meatus navigates directly adjacent to the orbit and anterior ethmoidal artery along the frontoethmoidal suture line. Superiorly, the cribriform plate and olfactory fila create a known weak point for cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea after trauma or iatrogenic injury, and fractures here can produce anosmia. Skull base surgeons and rhinologists plan around these constraints. Use this asset in head and neck anatomy teaching when you need to relate nasal conchae and septal structures to the anterior cranial fossa, or in ENT and neurosurgical materials describing endoscopic ethmoidectomy, cribriform plate defects, or orbital complications of rhinosinusitis.
