Description
Angled in a superior oblique view with a partial cranial section removed, the skull base is opened to expose the ethmoid bone centered between the orbital plates of the frontal bone and the anterior cranial fossa. The cribriform plate spans transversely, perforated for olfactory fila, while the crista galli projects superiorly in the midline for falx cerebri attachment. Inferior to the cribriform region, the perpendicular plate descends to form the superior part of the nasal septum, and laterally the ethmoidal labyrinths expand into the medial orbital walls, where the lamina papyracea sits thin and planar. Surgical anatomy lives here. The cribriform plate and fovea ethmoidalis define the roof of the nasal cavity, so even small variations in height or slope matter during functional endoscopic sinus surgery and anterior skull base approaches, where iatrogenic cerebrospinal fluid leak and meningitis are real risks. That same perforated roof is the pathway for olfactory nerve fibers; fractures through the anterior cranial fossa can shear these fila at the cribriform plate and produce anosmia. Thin bone.
