Description
Arising from the posterior tibial artery deep to the flexor retinaculum, the lateral plantar artery courses obliquely across the plantar aspect of the foot from the medial hindfoot toward the lateral border, then curves anteriorly to contribute to the deep plantar (arterial) arch. From this lateral perspective, its relationship to the calcaneus posteriorly and the cuboid and bases of the metatarsals anteriorly reads clearly, with the vessel lying plantar to the tarsal bones and trending toward the intermetatarsal spaces. Superficial venous channels track more dorsolaterally and subcutaneously, while deeper venous counterparts accompany the artery along its plantar trajectory. Orientation is clear. Clinical relevance centers on plantar perfusion. The lateral plantar artery is the dominant contributor to the deep plantar arch and, through plantar metatarsal arteries, supports digital blood flow, which is why it features in diabetic foot assessment, critical limb ischemia workups, and planning for plantar-based flaps. During approaches to the hindfoot and lateral midfoot, as well as debridement of plantar abscesses that can spread along the central compartment, knowing the artery’s position relative to the calcaneus and midfoot bones helps reduce iatrogenic vascular injury and guides incision placement. Palpation is unreliable here, so anatomic landmarks matter. Use this plate in lower-limb anatomy teaching to connect posterior tibial branching to the plantar arch, or in podiatry and orthopaedic texts discussing plantar compartments and surgical corridors. It also fits vascular surgery and wound-care materials that need a clean depiction of arterial and venous mapping in the leg and foot against bony reference.
