Description
Arising as the larger terminal branch of the posterior tibial artery deep to the flexor retinaculum, the lateral plantar artery courses anterolaterally across the plantar aspect of the male foot, passing between the flexor digitorum brevis superficially and quadratus plantae more deeply. Distally it tracks toward the bases of the metatarsals, where it typically curves medially to contribute to the plantar arterial arch and give off plantar metatarsal and digital branches. Adjacent blue neural elements would be expected to include the lateral plantar nerve and its branches, running in close company with the artery along the lateral plantar compartment. Clear bony landmarks include the calcaneus posteriorly, the cuboid laterally, and the metatarsals and phalanges distally. This plantar perspective matters when you need to teach or plan around the deep vascular plane of the sole, where the lateral plantar artery supplies much of the forefoot and underpins collateral flow to the toes. Revascularization strategies for critical limb ischemia, assessment of plantar arch patency in diabetic foot disease, and flap planning for plantar soft tissue reconstruction all depend on knowing the artery’s relationship to the plantar musculature and to the lateral plantar nerve.
