Arcing along the superolateral aspect of the knee, the superior lateral genicular artery branches from the popliteal artery posterior to the lateral femoral condyle and sweeps anteriorly deep to the biceps femoris tendon and lateral retinacular tissues. From this lateral perspective, the femur, tibia, and patella frame the joint, while the quadriceps tendon superiorly and the patellar ligament anteriorly provide clear anterior landmarks against the posterolateral vascular course. Small genicular arterioles radiate toward the capsule, where they anastomose with neighboring contributors to the periarticular arterial ring. Veins accompany the arterial pathways in the same region. The superior lateral genicular artery is one of the key inputs to the genicular anastomosis and the superior portion of the capsular plexus, a pattern that matters whenever the popliteal artery is compromised and collateral flow must maintain perfusion around the knee. Orthopedic exposures on the lateral side, including lateral parapatellar arthrotomy, distal femoral fixation, and soft tissue work near the lateral femoral condyle, place this vessel at risk because it runs close to the capsule and lateral retinaculum. Bleeding here can be stubborn. Its relationship to the lateral condyle also helps explain postoperative hemarthrosis and the vascular contribution to fracture healing in the distal femur. Course directors can drop this into lower limb anatomy labs to teach the spatial logic of the genicular branches, or into surgical education materials to orient trainees to the lateral knee “danger zone” for capsular and retinacular dissection.
