Description
Running superficially across the anterolateral face, the facial vein descends from the angular vein near the medial canthus, courses inferiorly and slightly posteriorly over the buccinator region, then crosses the inferior border of the mandible just anterior to the masseter. From there it continues into the upper neck to join the anterior division of the retromandibular vein, forming the common facial vein that drains to the internal jugular vein deep to the sternocleidomastoid. Tributaries expected in this profile-like view include the superior and inferior labial veins, lateral nasal veins, and the deep facial vein, the key conduit to the pterygoid venous plexus in the infratemporal fossa. Adjacent landmarks such as the parotid gland region, temporalis and masseter muscles, and the platysma set the vein in practical surgical context. Facial venous anatomy matters because it is both superficial and clinically unforgiving. The angular vein communicates with the superior ophthalmic vein, and the deep facial vein communicates with the pterygoid plexus, creating valveless pathways that help explain the spread of infection from the so-called danger triangle of the face toward the cavernous sinus.
