Description
Anterior arm anatomy is the logical focus, with the biceps brachii shown as a superficial fusiform muscle spanning the anterior compartment of the brachium. The long head tendon originates from the supraglenoid tubercle and courses within the intertubercular sulcus of the humerus, while the short head arises from the coracoid process and lies more medial proximally before the two bellies merge. Deep to the biceps, the brachialis covers the anterior humeral shaft, and distally the biceps tendon passes anterior to the elbow to insert on the radial tuberosity with the bicipital aponeurosis fanning medially into the antebrachial fascia. Simple surface anatomy. Palpating or exposing the biceps matters because its distal tendon and aponeurosis define key landmarks in the cubital fossa, where the brachial artery lies deep and slightly medial and the median nerve runs medial to the artery. Distal biceps tendon rupture typically presents with a proximal retraction of the muscle belly and supination weakness, and repair planning depends on understanding the tendon’s course toward the radius and its relationship to the lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve. Proximal long head pathology also tracks with its intra-articular origin and passage through the bicipital groove, a common pain generator in shoulder overuse and rotator cuff disease.
