Description
Seen from an anterior oblique, deep-angle perspective, the external vertebral venous plexus is traced along the outer surfaces of the vertebral column from the upper cervical region near the occiput to the lumbosacral spine and pelvis. Venous channels course longitudinally and segmentally around the vertebrae, with bridging connections that track toward the intervertebral foramina, where they communicate with the internal vertebral venous plexus via intervertebral veins. Adjacent skeletal landmarks include the cranium and mandible superiorly, the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebrae in series, and the iliac crests and pelvic ring inferiorly. Spinal nerves emerge laterally through the foramina, positioned in close proximity to the venous communications. External and internal vertebral venous networks matter because they form a low-pressure, valveless collateral pathway between the pelvis, thorax, and cranial venous systems, a setup that helps explain hematogenous spread that bypasses the caval system. This is the anatomy behind Batson plexus patterns, classically invoked when teaching vertebral metastases from prostate carcinoma and pelvic malignancy, as well as epidural venous engorgement contributing to radicular symptoms in situations that raise intra-abdominal pressure.
