Description
Running along the anterolateral wrist, the radial artery curves into the palm to contribute to the deep palmar arch, while the ulnar artery enters on the anteromedial side through Guyon canal to form the superficial palmar arch. Common palmar digital arteries arise distally from the arch and split into proper palmar digital arteries that track along the adjacent sides of the fingers toward the distal phalanges. Metacarpals and phalanges sit centrally as rigid landmarks, with the palmar vessels layered superficial to the metacarpals and then fanning distally into the digits. Palmar arterial anatomy matters when perfusion to a finger is in question. Lacerations across the distal palm can transect a common digital artery, and crush or ring avulsion injuries may leave a digit viable only through limited collateral flow between the superficial and deep systems. This anterior perspective also supports interpretation of Allen testing and the planning of radial artery harvest or transradial access, where a complete palmar arch and reliable ulnar contribution reduce the risk of ischemic complications. Hand surgeons and emergency clinicians can use this artwork to explain patterns of digital ischemia, safe incision placement, and expected bleeding sites in palmar trauma.
