Description
Running across the dorsum of the foot, the dorsal venous arch forms a superficial transverse channel just distal to the ankle joint, receiving digital and metatarsal dorsal veins before it continues proximally toward the lower leg. From a lateral perspective in a male specimen, the arch is seen draped over the dorsal midfoot, with its lateral continuation aligning with the course of the small saphenous vein as it tracks posterior to the lateral malleolus. Proximal superficial tributaries ascend along the lateral border of the leg, remaining superficial to the deep fascia and separated from the extensor tendons by subcutaneous tissue. Clean surface anatomy. This lateral view matters because the dorsolateral venous network is a common access route when dorsal foot cannulation is chosen, and it helps clarify why the lateral malleolus is a key landmark when tracing superficial venous return toward the posterior calf. Varicosities often become apparent along the superficial venous channels of the distal leg and foot, and distinguishing the dorsal venous arch from the great saphenous pathway on the medial side supports accurate mapping before sclerotherapy or ultrasound-guided procedures. The relationship to the ankle and malleoli also anchors teaching on venous valves, reflux patterns, and edema distribution in chronic venous insufficiency.
