Description
Originating from the superficial temporal artery within the temporal fossa, the zygomatico-orbital artery courses anteriorly along the zygomatic arch, passing deep to the temporalis fascia and in proximity to the lateral orbital rim. Red facial musculature frames its distal distribution toward the superolateral orbit, where it lies lateral to the orbicularis oculi and near the frontozygomatic suture. Companion superficial veins are suggested in blue, while underlying bony landmarks of the zygomatic bone, lateral orbital wall, and maxilla anchor the vessel’s trajectory. Surgical planning around the lateral canthus benefits from a clear map of this artery because it frequently contributes to vascular supply of the lateral eyelid and periorbital soft tissues, and it can anastomose with branches of the lacrimal and supraorbital systems. Bleeding from the zygomatico-orbital artery is a known nuisance during lateral orbital approaches, zygomatic arch exposure, and temporoparietal fascia flap elevation. Small vessel, big consequence. Educators can pair this artwork with head and neck anatomy teaching on branches of the external carotid artery, linking vessel position to the temporalis and masseter compartments and to palpable landmarks along the zygomatic arch. It also suits oculoplastic and craniofacial publications discussing lateral canthotomy/cantholysis, fracture exposure near the zygomaticofrontal region, and avoidance of vascular injury during cosmetic temporal and periorbital dissection. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
