Description
Arising from the posterior aspect of the external carotid artery, the occipital artery courses posteriorly and superiorly, passing deep to the posterior belly of the digastric and the sternocleidomastoid before turning toward the posterior scalp. A lateral skull view places it adjacent to the mastoid process of the temporal bone and the superior nuchal line of the occipital bone, with the vessel ascending in a plane posterior to the auricle and lateral to the upper cervical spine. Branching toward the occipital region, its distal segments spread over the occipitalis and scalp, while accompanying venous channels return toward the jugular system. Clear bony landmarks anchor the route. Clinically, this trajectory matters because the occipital artery is a reliable landmark during posterior cervical and mastoid region exposures, where staying oriented to the mastoid tip, digastric groove, and occipital groove helps prevent avoidable bleeding.
