Description
Posteriorly oriented, the pulmonary trunk is followed as it courses superiorly from the right ventricle and then bifurcates into the right and left pulmonary arteries, with the right branch running more horizontally toward the right lung and the left branch angling toward the left hilum beneath the aortic arch region. Portions of the left atrium and the posterior surface of the left ventricle form the muscular backdrop, while the great vessel roots cluster superiorly at the cardiac base. Epicardial coronary vessels track within the atrioventricular and interventricular grooves on the posterior surface, mapping the arterial supply and venous return of the myocardium. Spatially, the pulmonary arteries sit anterior to the main bronchi in the classic hilar arrangement, though the bronchi themselves may be outside the cropped field. This posterior perspective matters when you need to teach or plan around the pulmonary artery bifurcation and proximal branches, an area scrutinized in pulmonary embolism workups and in congenital variants such as pulmonary artery sling or branch pulmonary artery stenosis.
