Description
Oblique lateral anatomy of the male head and neck centers on the internal jugular vein as it exits the jugular foramen at the skull base and descends within the carotid sheath toward the thoracic inlet. The vein lies lateral to the common carotid artery in the lower neck and typically posterolateral to the internal carotid artery more superiorly, with the vagus nerve expected between them in the sheath even when not explicitly rendered. Superficially, the mandible, mastoid region, and cervical vertebrae provide bony orientation, while facial and scalp vessels form an anastomotic network over the calvaria and face. A clear landmark. Clinical practice lives on this relationship: the internal jugular vein is the standard target for central venous catheterization, and the lateral view helps you mentally map the vein’s course relative to the carotid arteries to reduce inadvertent arterial puncture. Superiorly, the jugular bulb at the skull base and proximal vein relate to otologic and skull base pathology, including jugular foramen lesions (for example, glomus jugulare paraganglioma) that can alter venous drainage patterns. Neck dissection planning also benefits from understanding how the internal jugular vein tracks deep to the sternocleidomastoid and alongside the carotid system.
