Description
Running deep to the sternocleidomastoid muscle, the internal jugular vein descends from the jugular foramen at the skull base toward the root of the neck, where it joins the subclavian vein to form the brachiocephalic vein. Superiorly, venous tributaries from the superficial face and scalp converge toward the jugular bulb, while along the neck the vein lies lateral to the common carotid artery and within the carotid sheath, a relationship that remains consistent down to the level of the clavicle. Bony context from the skull, mandible with teeth, and upper cervical vertebrae frames the course and caliber changes of the vessel. Red arterial counterparts, including the common and internal carotid arteries, provide immediate orientation against the blue venous drainage.
